How to choose single phase induction motors?

Most important is the starting torque of the motor, with the major difference, high starting torque motor or a normal starting torque motor. Depending on the type of load you need to accelerate you will select the motor accordingly. Compressors for example are normally a high starting torque application that will require the high starting torque motor.

In single phase motors with various starting type starting torque as % of FLT varies from 40 % to 250 %. For shaded pole it is about 40 % and used mainly for small Fan application, Capacitor start & Run about 60 % to 80 % and used for Fan, Pump, blow torque devices such as grinders etc, Split Phase (Resistance start & without capacitor) about 120 % for clutch motor , surgical pump etc, Capacitor start Induction run about 250 % for General purpose high torque as compressor , High inertia fans , Industrial / Agriculture equipment etc. Also efficiency & cost for given output varies from type of start motors. Shaded pole is with least efficiency & low cost motor.
